Alexander Bogdanov

Yury LotmanAlexander Alexandrovich BOGDANOV [penname of Malinovsky] (10. 08. 1873, Sokolka — 7. 04. 1928, Moscow) — Russian philosopher and revolutionary; founding member, with Lenin, of the Bolshevik Party in Geneva in 1904; and one of the leaders of the revolution of 1917. Son of a village school teacher, Bogdanov graduated from the Department of Medicine of Kharkov University in 1895, but his main works were devoted to philosophy, sociology, economics, and to the idea of a 'Union of Socialist Culture,' which he supposed to be a necessary adjunct to the political and trade union activities of the labour movement. In 1912 he published the first volume of his Universal Science of Organization, or 'Tektology,' which he conceived as an alternative epistemology to Hegelian dialectics for the social sciences, and, indeed, as a 'science of sciences.' From 1918–1921 Bogdanov worked in the Russian Proletarian Cultural Educational Association; from 1918 to 1926 he was a member of the Presidium of the Socialist Academy, also lecturing on management, economics, and

Biography

Marie CurieMarie Curienée Maria Sklodowska, was born in Warsaw on November 7, 1867, the daughter of a secondary-school teacher. She received a general education in local schools and some scientific training from her father. She became involved in a students' revolutionary organization and found it prudent to leave Warsaw, then in the part of Poland dominated by Russia, for Cracow, which at that time was under Austrian rule. In 1891, she went to Paris to continue her studies at the Sorbonne where she obtained Licenciateships in Physics and the Mathematical Sciences. She met Pierre Curie, Professor in the School of Physics in 1894 and in the following year they were married. She succeeded her husband as Head of the Physics Laboratory at the Sorbonne, gained her Doctor of Science degree in 1903, and following the tragic death of Pierre Curie in 1906, she took his place as Professor of General Physics in the Faculty of Sciences, the first time a woman had held this position. She was also appointed Director of the Curie Laboratory in the Radium Institute of the University of Paris, founded in 1914.

Her early researches, together with her husband, were often performed under difficult conditions, laboratory arrangements were poor and both had to undertake much teaching

Otto Lilienthal 1848 - 1896

The work with gliders in Germany by the Lilienthal brothers, Otto and Gustav (1849-1933), was, arguably, the most important aerial effort prior to that of the Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville. Otto Lilienthal's numerous flights, over 2,000 in number, demonstrated beyond question that unpowered human flight was possible, and that total control of an aerial device while aloft was within reach.

10 Most Expensive Foods

With the world in the grip of an international food crisis, supermarket prices increasing weekly and the cost of a Pot Noodle at an all-time high it seemed like a good time to take a somewhat tasteless (pun intended) look at the world’s most expensive foods.
While people across the globe struggle to feed their families, many of these luxurious foodstuffs are most likely to be found piled high on a silver spoon and stuffed into the yapping holes beneath the snooty noses of the world’s wealthiest gourmands.
Put another way – if you want to make an omelette with the following ingredients you’ll probably need to remortgage your house, I’m not sure it would taste too good though!
(Note: the prices below are attempted approximations based on data from a broad range of web sources; if you can find a more accurate price, or any other expensive foods, then let us know!)

The Secret History of Crop Circles

For the first time ever – the full story of the Crop Circle Phenomenon's early years!!
secretbook98.jpg (33592 bytes)
Crop circles represent one of the most important, enigmatic and mystifying unsolved mysteries of our time. Debate and controversy continues to rage over the true origins of the markings found swirled into fields of growing crops and grasses every year. The media often ridicule them, believers worship them, the unwise scoff and renowned scientists study them but as yet there is no overall theory as to just how they appear, or why. There has also always been the tacit assumption by many that it is a purely late  20-Century phenomenon.

One of the key problems is the debate over hoaxing. Not only are the claims of alleged hoaxers found to be highly dubious, but also the sheer scale of the phenomenon shows the circles to be anything other than a practical joke.

This is where The Secret History comes in.

This highly informative and important new book proves beyond any doubt that crop circles have been appearing in

Scientists Try to Crack Stonehenge's Prehistoric Puzzles

Photo: Stonehenge, England
Stonehenge in southern England ranks among the world's most iconic archaeological sites and one of its greatest enigmas. The megalithic circle on Salisbury Plain inspires awe and fascination—but also intense debate some 4,600 years after it was built by ancient Britons who left no written record.
The monument's mysterious past has spawned countless tales and theories. According to folklore, Stonehenge was created by Merlin, the wizard of Arthurian legend, who magically transported the massive stones from Ireland, where giants had assembled them. Another legend says invading Danes put the stones up, and another theory says they were the ruins of a Roman temple. Modern-day interpretations are no less colorful: some argue that

Nowadays it is a Historic National Sanctuary, protected by the Peruvian Government by means of Law Nº 001.81.AA of 1981, that tries to conserve the geological formations and archaeological remains inside the Sanctuary, besides protecting its flora, fauna and landscape's beauty. The whole park has an extension of 32,592 Has.; that is 80,535 acres(325.92 km²; 125.83 mile²). Machupicchu (the Inkan City) is located on kilometer 112 (70 miles) of the Qosqo-Quillabamba railway; the train station is known as "Puente Ruinas" and lies at an altitude of 2000 mts (6560 ft.). Easter Island: stones, history. Easter Island

Easter Island is the world's most isolated inhabited island. It is also one of the most mysterious. Eastern Island is roughly midway between Chile and Tahiti. The triangular shaped island (Easter Island) is made mostly of volcanic rock. Small coral formations exist along the shoreline, but the lack of a coral reef has allowed the sea to cut cliffs around much of the island. The coastline has many lava tubes and volcanic caves. The only sandy beaches are on the northeast coast. Easter Island we think of of huge stone carved figures - Easter Island Stones (or Eastern Island Stones).

Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm in what is now West Germany. His father was a manufacturer of electrical equipment. Business failure led his father to move Einstein's family first to Munich and later to Milan. There were no early indications of Einstein's intellectual capabilities; in fact, there was even some concern on the part of his parents when he was a small child that he might be somewhat backward. During his school years he showed no special aptitude because of his dislike for rigid methods of instruction, and he was cited by school officials as being disruptive. Einstein was fascinated by mathematics and science, subjects that he studied on his own. He became a high-school dropout when he left school to join his family in Milan. Einstein had his German citizenship revoked in 1896 and became a Swiss citizen in 1901. He died as a naturalized citizen of the United States on April 18, 1955, in Princeton, New Jersey.

Pearl Harbor

Introduction to the Attack on Pearl Harbor

Japanese military leaders recognized American naval strength as the chief deterrent to war with the United States. Early in 1941, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, Commander of the Japanese Combined Fleet, had initiated planning for a surprise attack on the United States Pacific Fleet at the beginning of any hostilities that the Japanese might undertake. The assumption was that before the United States could recover from a surprise blow, the Japanese would be able to seize all their objectives in the Far East, and could then hold out indefinitely.
By September 1941 the Japanese had practically completed secret plans for a huge assault against Malaya, the Philippines, and the Netherlands East Indies, to be coordinated with a crushing blow on the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor
in the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. Early in November Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo was named commander of the Pearl Harbor Striking Force, which rendezvoused secretly in the Kuriles. The force of some 30 ships

The Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Atomic Expolsion (Mushroom Cloud)At 2:45 in the morning of August 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber flew north from Tinian Island in the Marianas toward Japan. Three and a half hours later, over the city of Hiroshima, the Enola Gay dropped an 8,900-pound atomic weapon from its specially modified bomb bay. Two thousand feet above the ground, the bomb, dubbed "Little Boy" by its makers, detonated, leveling almost 90% of the city.

On August 9, another B-29, Bockscar, set out for the Kokura Arsenal on the southwest Japanese island of Kyushu. Foul weather, however, persuaded the pilot to proceed instead toward Nagasaki, the home of a Mitsubishi torpedo factory. Over this secondary target Bockscar dropped a larger device, code-named "Fat Man." Local geography spared Nagasaki from the near total devastation suffered by Hiroshima; only one third of the city was destroyed.

Fat Man and Little Boy

Fat Man and Little Boy, both weapons of unparalleled destructive power, were actually quite different. Little Boy, fueled by highly enriched uranium-235, was triggered by a simple "gun" mechanism; a small, slug-shaped piece of uranium was fired down a barrel into a larger, cup-shaped piece. This elementary design generated a destructive force of about 15 kilotons—the equivalent of 15,000 tons of TNT.

South Korea claims world's smartest robot

South Korean scientists said they had developed the world's smartest robot able to think and learn like a human.

Unveiling their creation, they said the robot that looks like a small teenager wearing a blue and grey space suit was the first wireless network-based human-like robot.

It can become wiser through learning because unlike other robots, the device is linked with an outside computer through a high-speed wireless telecom network, and is able to exchange information with the server and respond quickly to real-life environments.

South Korean scientists said they had developed the world's smartest robot able to think and learn like a human.[AFP]
"This is the first network-based humanoid in the world," said You Bum-Jae of the state-financed Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), introducing the 150-centimeter (60 inches)-high robot weighing 67 kilogrammes (147 pounds).
"We developed this humanoid focusing on intelligence capability by taking advantage of networking technology in which South Korea is strong," he said.

Unlike already-developed humanoids whose intelligence capabilities are largely fixed with built-in circuits, the network-based humanoid relies on its outside server whose capacity can be expanded easily.

Equipped with visual and force sensors, the new robot detects movements and speech, then sends the data to the server for processing and receives directions allowing it to interact with people and the environment.

At the unveiling here, the robot replied to New Year greetings from a TV commentator and shook hands with him.

It can recognize its master, detect and analyze visual and audio signals, and people's movements.

When showed a 10,000 won (US$10) bank note, it said: "That's a 10,000 bank note that people would like to have."

When asked about its name, it said: "I am sorry. I don't have a

The most important thing to remember when working with equations is to always do the same thing to both sides of the equation. This is called balance.
For example, if you add a number on the left side of the equation, then you also must add the same number to the right side of the equation.

  • A part of me relates to kids my age, a part of me doesn't, I'm not complaining about my life, but it definitely gets to me when I want to go to the beach. But then, I also want to travel and do all these cool things I get to do. It kind of clashes a little bit, but it's not something I can't handle.

Tony Hawk's Biography

BASIC INFO:
Birthdate: May 12, 1968
Birth place: San Diego, California
Parent's names: Frank and Nancy Hawk
Sibling's names: Lenore, Patricia & Steve
Children's names: Riley, Spencer, Keegan and Kadence

Tony Hawk was nine years old when his brother, Steve, changed his life by giving him a blue fiberglass banana board. Before skateboarding, Tony was a self-described nightmare. But he started goofing around on the thin Bahne skateboard, and his body finally caught up with his brain. “When he started getting good at skating it changed his personality,” says Steve. “Finally he was doing something that he was satisfied with. He became a different guy; he was calm, he started thinking about other people and became more generous.”
His mother agrees with a laugh: “I was just glad he was taking all his energy out on skateboarding and not on me.”

History of The Statue of Liberty

Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty National Monument officially celebrated her 100th birthday on October 28, 1986. The people of France gave the Statue to the people of the United States over one hundred years ago in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution. Over the years, the Statue of Liberty's symbolism has grown to include freedom and democracy as well as this international friendship.
Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design a sculpture with the year 1876 in mind for completion, to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. The Statue was a joint effort between America and France and it was agreed upon that the American people were to build the pedestal, and the French people were responsible for the Statue and its assembly here in the United States. However, lack of funds was a problem on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In France, public fees, various forms of entertainment, and a lottery were among the methods used to raise funds. In the United States, benefit theatrical events, art exhibitions, auctions and prize fights assisted in providing needed funds.
Meanwhile in France, Bartholdi required the assistance of an engineer to address structural issues associated with designing such a colossal copper sculpture. Alexandre
The History of Jakarta dates back to at least the 14th Century with the development of a small port of Hindu Pajajaran Kingdom at the mouth of Ciliwung River. Searching for the fabled “Spice Island”, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive and establish a fortress on the site in the early 16th Century.
The old port attacked by a neighboring sultanate under leadership of Prince Fatahillah. After the assault, the Portuguese navy fleet destroyed. Fatahillah changed the name of the Sunda Kelapa port to Jayakarta, meaning “Total Victory”,

History of Indonesia

The first known hominid inhabitant of Indonesia was the so-called "Java Man", or Homo erectus, who lived here half a million years ago. Some 60,000 years ago, the ancestors of the present-day Papuans move eastward through these islands, eventually reaching New Guinea and Australia some 30-40,000 years ago. Much later, in about the fourth millennium B.C., they were followed by the ancestors of the modern-day Malays, Javanese and other Malayo-Polynesian groups who now make up the bulk of Indonesia's population.

Trade contracts with India, China and the mainland of Southeast Asia brought outside cultural and religious influences to Indonesia. One of the first Indianized empires, known to us now as Sriwijaya, was located on the coast of Sumatra around the strategic straits of Malacca, serving as

History of China Great Wall

The history of the Great Wall is said to start from the Spring and Autumn Periods when seven powerful states appeared at the same time. In order to defend themselves, they all
built walls and stationed troops on the borders. At that time, the total length of the wall had already reached 3,107 miles, belonging to different states.

In 221 BC, the Emperor Qin absorbed the other six states and set up the first unified kingdom in Chinese history. In order to strengthen his newly born authority and defend the Huns in the north, he ordered connecting the walls once built by the other states as well as adding some sections of his own. Thus was formed the long Qin's Great Wall which started from the east of today's Liaoning Province and ended at Lintao, Gansu Province.

In the Western Han Dynasty, the Huns became more powerful.
